Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe is quoted as saying, "If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse; however if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that." This is called The Rule of Expectations. Individuals tend to perform exactly as others expect them to perform. It may come as no surprise to the reader that I have very high expectations in my classroom. Regardless of whether my expectations are low or high, my students will give the exact amount of effort required to meet them. I want a room full of high achievers, so I set the bar high. I expect students to be consistent in their attendance and in their studies. I expect students to put forth an honest effort and use their minds to think through difficult problems. I expect students to behave and be respectful to one another. As high as my expectations are, I am rarely disappointed. I communicate my high standards to my students, and they rise to meet them.
